What do you have faith for?
Every year my first year BSSM students demonstrate radical faith. They pray for the sick, prophesy to strangers, preach the gospel on the streets and pursue personal breakthrough. As they get ready to leave, their hearts are filled with promises and dreams for their lives. It’s easy to dream in a revival culture like Bethel Church, but they are about to face a stretching of their faith outside of this environment. My advice to them is this: know what you have faith for, and if you fail, let it not be in your belief in his nature.
The disciple Peter is my favourite example of this. Of course, he fails. We all fail from time to time. But what impresses me is that he also demonstrates exceptional faith. He expresses faith that he would never deny Jesus, even though he does. He expresses faith when he chooses to fight the soldier rather than let Jesus be taken away. He expresses faith as he steps out onto the water and when he launches himself out of the boat when he sees Jesus on the beach. These behaviors demonstrate an awareness of God and a faith in who Jesus is as the Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 says “without faith, it is impossible to please Him.” Like Peter, when we demonstrate faith by believing in God’s nature, we set ourselves up to please him. When we’re faced with something beyond our ability, we have two options. We can give into fear and accomplish the enemy’s desire to shut down the very thing that draws God’s pleasure, or we can stand in faith on who he is. For my students, for me, and probably for you – it will take big faith to fulfill what God has called us to. But we can get excited by every impossible situation in front of us because as we respond with an awareness of his nature he is able to reward us with his pleasure. In fact, we can celebrate these moments! If the only way we can please him is by faith, it’s in his kindness he gives us things to do that we will need faith for!
As sons and daughters of God I challenge you to look for places you can have faith so that you can step into the very thing that will please the father. As we grow in knowing His nature, let it become the most natural thing in the world to look for the impossible. Nothing can overwhelm us when we realise we are that which overwhelms. So if you’re scared, good! God wants you in a position that will require faith. What do you have faith for today?
